On the Way to Pluto with Jupiter Assistance...

  • Did you know that NASA had launched a mission previously targetting our Solar System's 9th Planet - Pluto?
  • Did you know that between the launch date and the arrival date of this mission in Jupiter, Pluto has been demoted to a "Dwarf" Planet?
  • Did you know that to IAU, Pluto has changed its name?
  • Did you know the name of the mission?
Some trivial question related to one spesific mission - New Horizon. And Pluto now - according to IAU, has been named 134340 in the Minor Planet Catalogue.

On January 19, 2006 - NASA has launched an interplanetary mission called New Horizon (NH). NH's missions were primarily set to observe the Sun's 9th Planet - Pluto and its twin binary,
Charon and their moons, Nix and Hydra. But since the IAU majority vote to demote the system into a "Dwarf Planet" classification in August 2006, even most of the mission control people felt the mission has been degraded - NH is still on its way.
